Winter
You may have heard the phrase, “It’s winter, or it’s construction season” which could make it seem that the colder months are generally not ideal for masonry work. However, you may also have noticed that construction continues throughout the entire year, including concrete high-rises.
Ideally, you will want to schedule outdoor masonry work when the weather is above freezing. The reality is that certain types of masonry work can be done year-round, with a few advance preparations.
These preparations can help a small project such as a walkway move ahead in less than ideal weather. Preparations include encapsulating the workspace with plastic sheeting and providing a heat source so that mortar does not freeze and can cure properly - this includes ensuring adequate head during the process of mixing as well as applying and curing. This works for small masonry projects but generally isn’t practical for large projects.
Also, consider the ability to excavate in preparation for masonry work. Digging below the frost line may be required, which can be challenging in a deep freeze. Frozen ground can also interfere with the compaction of aggregates necessary to support a heavy structure like a patio.
We recommend that you do not work with a landscaping contractor who suggests mixing antifreeze into the concrete. This will result in unattractive white marks on the completed project.
Spring
Spring may have volatile weather with a lot of rain. In this case, the project needs to be covered with plastic sheeting or tarps to prevent excess water infiltration during the curing process. Early spring snowstorms can also wreak havoc on the job site. Water is the biggest problem. Whenever earth is excavated - say, for footings for a retaining wall - excess moisture will cause the soil to shift and become unstable,
As long as the danger of frost has passed and the site is weatherproofed and heated, it’s generally safe to proceed.
Summer
High temperatures and humidity make for less than ideal working conditions, but at least there’s no chance of freezing temperatures potentially causing improper curing. During the summer, masons will be extremely busy and you’ll be unlikely to secure a spot unless you’ve planned well ahead.
Autumn
From the perspective of a mason, fall is the ideal time for masonry work. The temperatures are cooler, humidity has decreased, and work can continue even on cold, dreary days.
From the perspective of a homeowner, fall is the time when most landscapers experience a slowdown in work volume, so you may be able to get your project started sooner. Since there is somewhat of a shortage of skilled masons and since the ideal construction season is short, schedules fill up quickly.
Of course, each year has its unique challenges so it’s impossible to predict with certainty what the upcoming seasons will hold. For best results, plan well in advance, and practice lots of patience if the project is delayed due to weather.
